Flooring calculator FAQ

How many boxes of flooring do I need?

Measure the room's square footage (length times width), add a waste factor for cuts and mistakes, then divide by the coverage printed on each box and round up. For a 195 square foot room with 20 square feet per box and 10% waste, that's about 11 boxes. Always buy a little extra from the same dye lot for future repairs.

How much waste should I add for flooring?

Use about 5% for a simple square or rectangular room with straight runs, 10% as a standard allowance, and 15% or more for diagonal layouts, herringbone or chevron patterns, or rooms with lots of angles and closets where you'll make many cuts.

Do I need underlayment?

Most floating floors (laminate and many LVP products) need an underlayment for cushioning, sound, and moisture control — unless the planks have it pre-attached. Underlayment is sold by the roll; divide your room square footage by the coverage per roll and round up.

How do I measure an irregular room?

Break the room into rectangles, calculate each one's square footage, and add them together. Then apply your waste factor to the total. For odd angles, measure the largest rectangle that contains the space and treat the offcuts as part of your waste allowance.

Should I buy all the flooring at once?

Yes. Color and texture can vary slightly between manufacturing batches (dye lots), so buy your whole job — plus your waste allowance and a spare box or two — in one order to keep everything matched.
